About: Angela Carli

Angela Carli Portrait

Born in Siena in 1978, Angela Carli demonstrated a natural inclination for drawing and color from early childhood. Her academic path is deeply rooted in the Tuscan tradition: she first graduated from the “Duccio di Buoninsegna” Art Institute in Siena and continued her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where she earned her degree with honors. In 2002, she opened her first art studio in Siena. Today, she works and teaches painting in her atelier located in the historic center—on Via Stalloreggi, a street historically known as the “artists’ road”—where she pursues her personal research and shares her techniques with new students.

The fundamental shift toward her signature style occurred during her academy years, when she dedicated her thesis to the study of the nude in art and mass media. This research explored the perception of the body in relation to advertising and marketing dynamics—themes that would become the beating heart of her Pop Art works. Her recent pieces are created on original supports, such as newspaper pages from the 1950s, which she uses to achieve a “torn poster” effect.

Angela describes her painting as an homage to female complexity, seeking to capture in her subjects’ eyes that specific blend of fragility and strength inherent to women. She is known for her rigorous approach: she does not hesitate to destroy a canvas if she fails to render the subject’s gaze exactly as she imagined it, as she considers the eyes to be the “gateway to the soul.” Her works have been exhibited in various galleries in Italy (including the “Il Bargello” Gallery in Siena) and abroad, particularly in France and Spain (Alicante). Her art has also moved beyond the canvas, leading her to design the poster for the film Not to Forget by director Valerio Zanoli and the cover for the jazz album The Donkey Flying by Matteo Addabbo.
